Sinhala Words - Spelling Game

Sinhala Words - Spelling Game was developed as an interactive tool to help you improve your spelling of Sinhala words (සිංහල වචන) and to enhance your knowledge of the Sinhala alphabet (සිංහල හෝඩිය). The app is designed in the form of the simple game, with a scoring and level progression system. The objective of the game is to spell the Sinhala word of the image that appears on the game screen. If you spell the Sinhala word correctly you get a certain score. The difficulty of the game increase as you progress through the levels. Game mechanisms and the scoring structure is detailed in the help section.

Requirements: Internet browser with CSS3 support. Including: Internet Explorer 9+, Chrome 4+, Firefox 3.5+(partial support) 22+ (full support), Safari 4+, Opera 15+, iOS Safari 4.1+, Android Browser 2.3+, Chrome for Android 51+, IE Mobile 10+, UC Browser for Android 9.9+, Samsung Internet 4+. Older browsers only have partial functionality.

• How to Play

  The objective of the game is to spell the Sinhala word that corresponds to the image shown in the game screen. Use the on screen keyboard to type in Sinhala letters into the text box. For instance, if an image of a mouth is shown in the game screen, type 'කට' (the Sinhala word for mouth) in the text box. Then click the Ok to see if you spelled the word correctly. If you are correct a tick () appears. A cross () if the word is spelled incorrectly. You are given a score for a correct answer. The score is presented as partially filled or complete stars (see the Scoring section below). You can go to the following level by clicking the Next button. Here another image appears and you need to repeat the process. Spelling of the Sinhala words becomes more difficult as you progress through the levels. In the Standard Mode there are 40 levels to complete the game. Quick and Long game modes have 20 and 80 levels respectively.

  NB: There could be images which be accurately represented by several different words. In the current app only the most typically used word corresponds to a correct answer. Note that rules of typing Sinhala content in web pages also apply here. Notably, vowels are typed as a single character without conjoined signs.

• Sinhala Typing

  Mouse click on a key (button) in the on-screen keyboard generates the character in the selected location (cursor position or highlighted range) in the text box.

  • Vowels (අ,ඉ,උ...) are typed in as a single character. Signs (්,ා,ැ...) generally are not conjoined to vowels.
  • Consonants (ක,ග,ච...) should be typed before the sign even if the sign appears prior to the consonant in the sequence of characters ( e.g. ක then ෙ produces කෙ).
  • Certain signs keys produces varying character shapes based on the attached consonant ( eg. ම + ු → මු whereas ක + ු → කු and ක + ් → ක් whereas ම + ් → ම් ).
• Scoring

  In the Sinhala Words - Spelling Game scores are presented as partially filled or complete stars. Scores are given for each correct answer. The weight of the score is based on the difficultly in spelling the word. At initial levels you are given a partially filled star for each correct answer, whereas, in the final levels you score a complete star for each word spelled correctly. Cumulative tally of your star score is shown in the section above the image screen. The table below shows the weight of each scoring unit in the game.

• Game Complete Stats

  The game is complete once you've attempted to spell the allotted number word for the given game mode. Specifically, 20, 40 and 80 words for Quick, Standard and Long game mode respectively. Upon completion you'd be provided with several piece of information on your performance in the game. In the initial screen, along with your final score you will be given a mark for your performance. 'Perfect' performance means every word was spelled correctly. In the subsequent window detailed statistic will be displayed. Words are rated and categorised according difficulty. Number of correct and incorrect answers for each category is presented here.
